Thanks to everyone who opened their hearts by either donating or by spreading the word.
Our Goal of $45 000 was reached in less than 3.5 days…WOW 🙂
Please continue to donate as this only takes care of the immediate doctor expenses and does not cover any additional out of pocket costs.
The surgery is scheduled 31 August 2016.
My name is Genique and I’m 5 years old, from Perth, Western Australia.
I enjoy the outdoors and going to the park with my family. At the park, daddy and I will kick the soccer ball, and afterwards I’ll swing. I can swing on my own without help from daddy or mommy.
I’m a very active girl and will easily run circles around you 🙂
I give HUGE cuddles, especially to mommy and daddy.
2015-12
In March 2016 I was diagnosed with a brain tumor growing from the optic nerve. It’s called a Pilocytic Astrocytoma, but I just call it my “mushroom”.
The tumor measures 43mm x 40mm X 33mm and restricts blood flow to my eyes. This caused me severe vision loss. I am no longer able to see a beautiful rainbow or kick the ball with daddy like I used to. I can no longer keep up with my friends on the playground. I lost my confidence on the monkey bars and swinging on my own. It is also harder to put on shoes and doing my shirt’s buttons. In time I will get better at this 🙂
The tumor is very close to other important structures in my brain and the doctors were, and still is, very concerned. Doctors advised removing the tumor immediately.
I had a six hour brain surgery and in the end, they could not remove my “mushroom” because of the risks in causing blindness 🙁
I started my journey with chemotherapy at the end of March 2016.
It makes me really sick, and I’m looking forward to the day I don’t need chemo anymore. I also want to grow my hair again as we all know that chemo “eats” your hair. The chemo is also causing me hearing loss and I have difficulty walking.
Everything hurts all the time 🙁
There is also the risk of developing cancer in other parts of my body.
Doctors advised chemo is there to keep the tumor from growing any bigger but won’t shrink it.
I’m stuck with my “mushroom” for the rest of my life.
Mommy and daddy learned about a surgeon, Prof. Charlie Teo, in Sydney.
Prof. Charlie and his team investigated my condition and are able to help me. We are all very excited!
Unfortunately, it means another surgery but it will improve my vision and might stop the chemo.
Life without chemo means no more needles every Wednesday. My hair can grow long, and I will be able to run around with my friends again.
Before the surgery mommy and daddy have to pay a considerable amount.
The doctors need $45 000 before the surgery.
This amount sounds big, but how does one eat an elephant? Bite for bite.
If we all give something we will hit the target in no time.
This is my chance at a “normal” life and you can be a part of it.
Could you please be so kind and donate?
Much appreciated,
Genique and family 🙂

Cortisol Critically Low On Monday 7 November, Genique went for blood tests in preparation for her port removal surgery the next day. The sad news is her blood tests showed low levels of cortisol. Doctors didn’t feel comfortable putting her through surgery and postponed it. (The port is a small medical appliance that is surgically installed beneath the skin. A catheter connects the port to a vein. Port was when she had chemo treatment) Yesterday Genique went for a stress test to further investigate her cortisol levels. Before the test, a blood sample is taken. Genique is then injected with something to stimulate the brain (adrenal gland) to produce a hormone called cortisol. After a few minutes another blood sample is taken…and another one. If normal or above normal levels of cortisol is found in her blood, it is good. If the levels are still low, it is an indication that the brain does not produce the cortisol. Today, the blood results indicated critically low cortisol levels 🙁 Genique was admitted to hospital and will start with small dosages of cortisol. She will be monitored for the rest of the week and hopefully we will have her and Sylvia home by Friday. The neurosurgeons did say it could take months for functionality to return. The plan is to repeat the stress test every three months. But for now, doctors will treat the current situation. Keep them prayers and positive vibes coming. Kind Regards Ruan and Sylvia.

Welcome home, Blom! Today was fantastic in two ways… It was Sylvia’s birthday and secondly, Genique came home (perfect gift for a brave mum). We still have to visit the hospital every second day to monitor her sodium levels but it’s just a simple finger prick blood test, one Genique knows very well and is fairly comfortable with. It is still a long road, but we’ll take it on one step at a time. Upon arrival today, Genique walked in and lay down on our sofa and said: “I just LOVE our house” 🙂 I think she really missed her home and her happy place. I aslo think she likes going to the toilet without someone giving her a bed pan. I think she likes having long naps, without someone asking about squeeze arm (blood pressure) or blood tests from her butterfly (implanted port). I think she likes her mum’s food the best. I think she likes having a bath, where she can soak and share it with her brother and sister and chat away about the day’s events or just being silly, more than having to be wiped with a cloth. I think she likes her own bed, more than the one with rails. I think she likes being loved… Welcome home, Blom. Daddy, mummy, Zanneh and Xayden love you – XxxX.

For those who missed our Facebook update yesterday at 18:10 (Perth time)… “First of all we want to say God is good, all the time! Thank you for praying with us and sending us all the positive and good vibes! Genique is doing so much better. They reduced the steroids since yesterday and she is on half the fluids she was on. Dr said we can start oral steroids tomorrow and hopefully get rid of the drip too! She is managing her fluids much better but still needs a tablet to help keep her sodium levels down. She did a MRI yesterday and it shows there is still a lot of swelling and that the gland regulating the fluids is not as bright as it is supposed to be. This explains why she is having trouble with the fluid regulation. So we still need prayers or positive vibes for that bright spot to be bright again and her vision to improve.” Again thanx for the support all around the world. You guys are not only changing Genique’s life but also have a big impact on ours. Sincerely Ruan & Sylvia.

Hi, My apologies as it’s been a while since an update. Last few days were just a bit too much 🙁 In Sydney the surgery went well and Charlie Teo removed 85-90% of the tumour. Genique’s sight is still not there, but could be 5 weeks before any change. Sometimes she can see for up to 10 seconds then it will be gone again. Other issues like her hormones which is all over the place at the moment. According to neurosurgeons it is expected because of the tumour’s location. We arrived back in Perth on 9-Sep 2016. On the 10th we visited the hospital again to make sure Genique was fine after the long flight. Overall she seemed fine but there was still the swollen tummy which was, and still is, a big concern. We believe the swollen tummy is side effects of all the medicine she’s currently on. We discussed the matter with our family doctor who requested Genique’s medicine list and carefully went through it. Afterwards we identified many side effects in Genique and decided to propose to wean down some of the meds. Endocrine doctors agreed (which never happens) and the only condition they had was to admit her in hospital to monitor her – too easy. It was a relieve and she was admitted yesterday (21-Sep). In hospital doctors discovered she had a racing heartbeat and that there was a fever too. The racing heartbeat I was aware of when I gave her a good night kiss the previous night. I remember putting my head close to her chest and thinking…what is going on in there? The fever was something new – 39C. Doctors suggested it could be infection and we have to get her healthy before we can start weaning her down on meds. Maybe it is all the crazy meds that is the cause of it all !. Fever was better today and pretty normal. Her sodium was high tough. They don’t know really why…or maybe they do they just find it hard to explain it to us mere mortals 🙂 The plan is to keep her in hospital and she’ll be home…and I don’t know when she’ll be home 🙁 Hopefully soon. In the meantime Sylvia looks after Genique and I look after our other two. I work early mornings and then head off for the school run. Pretty much work the rest of the day until afternoon’s school run. Every night I visit Genique and Sylvia and take some dinner for my lovely. It is tough on us all. Hospital life is not for the fainthearted. Thanks for all the messages and words of encouragement. We appreciate it dearly. Sincerely Ruan.

Today was a long and emotional day for us as parents. We had to make a decision for our daughter today, will we try to preserve some vision or do we go for better quality of life? The tumour is very close, if not pressing on the Hypothalamus in the brain. This section of the brain responsible for the production of many of the body’s essential hormones, chemical substances that help control different cells and organs. The hormones from the hypothalamus govern physiologic functions such as temperature regulation, thirst, hunger, sleep, mood, and the release of other hormones within the body. This area of the brain houses the pituitary gland and other glands in the body. Although this portion of the brain is small in size, it is involved in many necessary processes of the body including behavioral, autonomic (involuntary or unconscious), and endocrine functions, such as metabolism and growth and development. Genique is already presenting some issues in the areas of thirst, mood, behaviour and regulation of body temperature. If we decide to leave the tumour and continue with current treatment (chemo), it will take her vision and her health. If doctors remove the tumour it can cause blindness but at least the tumour will be away from the hypothalamus. We chose better quality of life. So, the plan is to remove 80-90% of the tumour but by doing this she will loose total vision in her one eye 🙁 Doctor will leave some of the tumour to preserve some vision in the other eye. Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9am Sydney time. We have no idea how long the surgery will be and we will post updates on Facebook as soon as possible. Sincerely, The Beukes family PS: If you don’t have Facebook, you can follow here http://surgeryupdates.s3-website-ap-southeast-2.am…

Hi, Exactly four weeks ago my wife and I started a fundraiser in a desperate attempt to give our little girl a chance at a “normal” life. Today, with hearts filled with gratitude, we can celebrate that you’ve helped us reached the enormous amount of $45K in less than 3.5 days (a weekend), and it is still growing 🙂 Currently the total is more then $65K. WOW!!!! This is inspiring and something we all can be proud of. We received the lump sum from chuffed.org during this week and we decided to open Genique’s own bank account. The campaign is still active and donations coming in goes into Genique’s account on a 2 day cycle. Tomorrow night we fly out to Sydney! We will relax the weekend and then on Tuesday, 30 August, we see doctor Teo for a consultation. Wednesday, 31 August, is the planned surgery. We will update you on the outcome of the surgery in the weeks to come. From our family, to yours, we sincerely thank you. Ruan and Sylvia Beukes. PS: The campaign will end the 31 August 2016.
